Sam Harris on Islam, Jihad, and the regressive Left
Worth reading in full:
These people are part of what Maajid Nawaz has termed the “regressive Left”—pseudo-liberals who are so blinded by identity politics that they reliably take the side of a backward mob over one of its victims. Rather than protect individual women, apostates, intellectuals, cartoonists, novelists, and true liberals from the intolerance of religious imbeciles, they protect these theocrats from criticism.
Meanwhile, ISIS has female sex slaves and fills mass graves with Yezidi women too old to be sexually attractive and also launches terrorist attacks in Europe using Angela Merkel's open borders to infiltrate more killers. The West's intellectual elites have gone mad.
As Harris points out, without Islam there is no terrorist attack suicide cult.
According to Greenwald and the rest of the regressive Left, one can criticize religion in general, but any special focus on Islam must be motivated by bigotry or “Islamophobia.” And on that assumption, many of these people think it’s fair to slander and demonize anyone who does focus on Islam—even a true Muslim reformer like Maajid Nawaz. Maajid is a former Islamist, who now runs a counter-extremist think tank in the UK. And yet for merely entering into a dialogue with me about the prospects of spreading secular, liberal values in the Muslim world, he was branded a “native informant” and a “porch monkey” by Greenwald’s colleague at The Intercept, Murtaza Hussain, and a “lapdog” by Reza Aslan’s employee, Nathan Lean. These people are simply desperate to shut down dialogue on what is fast becoming the most important political and moral question of our time. Everything they do in this area is dishonest and destructive.
Read the whole thing. He addresses most of what is wrong with the response of Western progressives to Islam's problems for us.

Great read, although I'm not sure christians are that different from muslims. Nevertheless, Sam Harris knows how to explain things very good. He's got a wonderful logic and the way he takes you into his views is a very nice ride and mental delight. His ideas are deep and worthy of consideration. I myself think that all forms of religious dogmaitism should be banned from all public schools and open television. I believe religion is highly toxic, because given the right social circumstances belief can lead us into a Dark Age as long and as cruel as the one between the Fourth and the Fourteenth Centuries.
Really, modern Christianity not much different than Islam? This is poppycock. It gets really tiring to witness this phenomenon every time there is another atrocity perpetrated by radical hate-filled Muslims. Well, Christians are just as bad... Then we get lectured on the Crusades and other ancient atrocities. Oh how can we forget the tens of thousands killed by anti-abortion radicals - oh wait not tens of thousands but a handful over several decades. Oh, don't forget about then evil creationists that petition through legal legislative processes to include mis-guided creationist theology in the schools - the monsters! And of course there are those nativity scenes on the public square, burning through the eyes of the non-believers - pure evil.
Just where is this evidence that modern Christians are just as bad as ISIS, al Qadia and the Muslim Brotherhood etc etc?
Dear "check it out", I'm not that sure that you are any different from an identikit mad leftist. And it appears to be the -- deeply irrational -- religion of Progressivism that is currently leading us into a new Dark Ages.
Also, Islam is the only religion I know where people who knew them regularly say that terrorists became "more devout" before committing their atrocities:
'"I recently heard it from relatives that she has become a religious person and she often tells people to live according to the teachings of Islam," said Batool, a teacher who lives in Karor Lal Esan, about 280 miles southwest of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.'
'Tamerlan wasn’t a devout practicing Muslim, “but just recently, maybe two years ago, he started praying five times a day,” she said.'
Sam Harris is an intellectual lightweight that criticizes religion yet fails to recognize his own fascile religion of scientism and the myth of progress.
