Americans Can Travel To The Cuban Bad Idea Museum

You can now vacation in a museum for bad ideas from the 19th and 20th century. The trip has to be structured and educational.

Moreover, those traveling on people-to-people exchanges will still need to go with a group that maintains a full schedule of approved activities.

So I'm telling you: Cuba is educational. What is communism like? Go and see. Is communism a bad idea? Walk around in Havana and see. Go out into the country and really see.

As I said back in 2010:

Cuba is a living museum for communism. Cuba exists to remind us in real time that communism fails as an economic system. We should be grateful to the Cubans for playing the role of economic educators with their entire lives. Given that most people know squat about history the existence of a present day reminder serves a useful function.

More recently I've reiterated this in my post Pedagogical Value Of Communist Countries.

I think tour groups for Social Justice Warriors should be organized with interviews of local incredibly poor people. Let them describe just how incredibly little they live on. Compare and contrast with the amount of money the average denizen of Detroit or Newark or any other poor area of the US has. This is all incredibly educational and the flight is not far.

Don't celebrate too quickly Randall. Historically, the only thing that caused capital to reduce pressure on labour was the fear of being the first against the wall when the revolution came.

Canadians have been going to Cuba for decades and until recently I only ever heard them say positive things about the place - no crime, free health care, stress-free lives, etc. American progs who vacation in Cuba will see what they want to.

HA!

-Cuba has the lowest infant mortality rate in the Americas. Lower than the US
-Cuba has the best education in the Americas. Better than the US
-Cuba has the best medical school and practice in the Americas. Better than the US
-Cubans are bettered nurtured than most countries in the Americas. Better than the US
-Cubans rates above right-winged countries like Mexico or the US in public safety, all of the above.
-Cuba's crime rate is lower than most countries in the Western Hemisphere including the US.
-Cuba for decades has rated above most Latin American countries in the Olympics.
-Cuba had 3000 doctors ready to help diring the Catina crisis while Bush had his head up his ass.
-Fidel Castro was the main force against the Apartheid in South Africa, while the US supported its fascist government. (ha!) Maybe you've forgotten what close friends he was with Nelson Mandela...

So if you go out into the country and really see, i mean, really see further than all those old cars and lack of paint on buildings and houses, you'll see a small disciplined society, faced up against the most powerful country in the world for decades, fighting a fierce embargo, where Fidel Castro has had a much greater acceptance and popularity rate by the people than any of the previous 10 American presidents, doing better than countries like Mexico, Peru, Honduras, Colombia, Haiti, Salvador, Dominican Republic and some others. You keep thinking that Cubans are starving... (ha!)

A tiny country faced up against the rest of the neoliberal world for over 50 years sounds like a hell of a legacy to me... A little like the 300 Hundred Spartans at Thermopylae, only Cuba is still standing, and let's not forget, that it was the US that was recently softened... (ha!)

Look what being friends with the US has done to Mexico, Colombia and Peru...

Not much!

Living standards in Spain increased dramatically under Francisco Franco. 1930's Germany had the best highways in the world, and one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Benito Mussolini significantly cut Italy's infant mortality rate, and significantly improved public health. Apartheid South Africa had the highest living standards in Africa for Blacks, and in fact had to put up fenced to keep people out. Mexico under Profirio Diaz posted some of the fastest economic growth rates in history.

having been made aware of these facts, I'm sure that leftists everywhere will rush to defend these disciplined societies on the basis of these very real accomplishments...

"Mexico under Profirio Diaz posted some of the fastest economic growth rates in history"

Yes, "under Porfirio", but it was Benito Juárez who laid the foundations of that growth, not Díaz. It was Juárez who made the railroad contracts and everything else for Mexico's modernization. So your half a truth is a whole lie. Your statement is a fallacy, becasue it misleads into believing that it was Porfirio Díaz (the greatest dictator Mexico has known) the one responsible for that economic growth. That also happens way too often in movies, when all the credit is given to "the hero" (the star) and never any credit to every one who died for the cause. That is so specially in Tom Cruise movies. It's very common for simple minds to give credit where none is due.

"Living standards in Spain increased dramatically under Francisco Franco."

Killing children by the thousands is what you call "increased living standards"? Gosh, you're talking about dictators! Franco was one of Hitler's best friends.

Your history is more or less right, but you quote totally out of context in all those countries you mention.

I'll show you that today the countries with the lowest crime rates in Europe have had long Socialist traditions.

Seth W. said at January 21, 2015 2:59 PM:

Besides, your post did in no way contradict my post or prove it false in any way. Let's keep focused. We're talking about Cuba. Socialist Cuba, not Batista's Cuba where most citizens were hungry poor.

The SJW's would simply come up with contrived reasons as to why it's all the fault of capitalist oppressors. Even when well over the half the world's land mass, and a greater percentage of the population, was under communist or socialist rule, they still managed to find a way to blame the failure of those systems on the western capitalists.

No blaming anybody here. Just stating what is actually true.
