Scottish Highlander Regiments Replaced By Sheep

Over at The Oil Drum "Heading Out" quotes from Michael Brander's book Scottish Highland Regiments on why the Duke of Sutherland could not find Scottish volunteers to fight in the Crimean War.

I am sorry for the response your Grace’s proposals are meeting here today, so near the spot where your maternal grand-mother, by giving some forty-eight hours notice, marshaled 1,500 men to pick out the 800 she required. But there is a cause for it, and a genuine cause, and, as your Grace demands to know it, I must tell you, as I see that none else is inclined in the assembly to do so. These lands are now devoted to rear dumb animals which your parents considered of far more value than men . . . . your parents, yourself and your Commissioners have desolated the glens and the straths of Sutherland where you should find hundreds, yea thousands of men to meet and respond to your call cheerfully had your parents kept faith with them. How could your Grace expect to find men where they are not?

How tragic. There's a lesson here.

Do you feel like our leaders have not kept faith with us?

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of white morons willing to join the army and sacrifice themselves to the empire that hates their guts, that wants to see them exterminated. Jim Robinson and the crew at National Review will see to that. The British empire was paternalistic to old Jock, but as far as I know they didn't want to exterminate him, and they only wanted to shear the sheep. I guess you could say Jock and the sheep were one up compared to present-day white Americans in that respect.

Yep. IIRC, this type of depopulation is what ultimately weakened the Byzantine Empire and allowed the Seljuk Turks to conquer Anatolia.

A couple of points:

The American Clearances were largely a repeat of the Scottish lowland (Strathclyde) clearances -- same family/clan/genetic lines were cleared in each case and by about the same economic forces. Only difference is the frontier that was supposed to have been opened up as an escape route got closed off by NASA -- or at least NASA was the proximate blocking institution.

The result was genocide on the order of 40 million missing children resulting in a demographic vacuum being filled by immigration against the will of those of American settler stock.

Genocide and replace. Its a pretty old game. The thing is the actual actors in this genocide are sneaks with all kinds of patsies taking the blame.

I watched a documentary that had an interesting multi-generational perspective. It argued that throughout history rulers/upper class/capital/gentry/etc have been focused on maintaining a compliant underclass of labour/serfs/commoners etc. Consequently, attempts at establishing union movements had been put down uncounted times over the last 2500 years because organised labour created a less compliant workforce.

The thesis argued that the successful rise of the union movement in the 19th century created a workforce that had reached such a critical mass that it couldn't be put down with violence. So capital changed its tactics: it co-opted economic arguments and for the first time in industry, under the guise of economic rationalism, began the widespread import of a replacement cohort of labour/serfs/commoners that would simultaneously be compliant and undermine the effectiveness of the union movement.

I think there are obvious flaws in the thesis, but it does have one undeniable thing on its side: The purpose of a system is what it does, not what it claims to do.
