British Prime Minister: In/Out Vote On EU Membership
David Cameron wants to renegotiate British membership terms in the European Union and then hold a popular vote on the new terms.
ďAnd when we have negotiated that new settlement, we will give the British people a referendum with a very simple in or out choice to stay in the EU on these new terms; or come out altogether. It will be an in-out referendum.
Cameron is taking the position that Britain should not leave the EU, but rather negotiate terms that take back some power from Brussels. Others in his cabinet would like to exit now or just have a vote now.
The British are fortunate that they never adopted the Euro. That makes an EU exit much easier. Plus, the Euro sovereign debt crisis hasn't hit them as hard as it otherwise would have. Greece and Spain both have unemployment rates over 26% while Ireland is at 14.6%. Ireland's unemployment rate decline is partly due to emigration. Britain's unemployment level is 11.5%.

The Brits nearly put joining the euro to a referendum about 12 years ago. The Brits had a referendum on fox hunting, and the British press considered this a precursor to Blair putting the euro to a referendum. After a failed pro-EU vote in Ireland at roughly the same time, Labour never put it to the people. They dodged a huge bullet and retained a shred of sovereignty. Now they are udner Goldman's control though with the new head of the BOE.
The Brits had a referendum on fox hunting, and the British press considered this a precursor to Blair putting the euro to a referendum.
Unless my memory is failing me there was a 'free vote' on fox hunting in the House of Commons, not a referendum. A free vote is when the MPs are free to vote anyway they choose as the issue is not deemed party policy.
yeah, there was no referendum on Fox hunting.
And it would not have been a precursor to a Euro vote if it had been, the European elites are all massively pro EU and they wouldn't call a vote unless there were almost 100% sure to win.
Even Supposedly pro-EU countries like France and Ireland voted against EU when put to the general public.
Camerons promise is 100% empty and worthless, they already made similar referendum promises in the past on various EU treaties and reneged on them.
I stand corrected. Thanks. I agree that nothing regarding the EU would ever come toa vote without the pro-EU side knowing they could win. There have been enough embarrassing eu referendum votes in other countries to make national leaders nervous now.
The Tories are going to be voted out of power at the next election, so this promise is pretty meaningless, isn't it? The ONLY way the Tories could be served is to have the referendum right away (like in the next six months).
If the Tories had any sense they'd hold the referendum on the same day as the next General Election.
And they'd probably lose to the UKIP or even BFP.
DIRECT DEMOCRACY IS THE BEST DEMOCRACY
USA AND ALL NATIONS NEED BINDING SUPERSEDING NATIONAL REFERENDA
This is a good idea. Cameron should submit immigration issues to the national referenda also.
Eg. Immigration (legal and illegal) is destroying America. Aliens are taking our jobs, depressing wages, causing congestion, overcrowding, inflation, water shortages, crime and terrorism and bankrupting our welfare state. 80% of the people are against it. When you see our "representatives" (who are our servants) take bribes and turn to crimes against their own nation, such as flooding the nation with aliens, and we have to meekly beg our servants to stop their war on our nation, we know something is clearly wrong with our system.
The problem is that there are no binding national referenda in the United States. Many other countries, including 3rd world countries, have it, but not the US! Therefore America's secret shame is that we do not have a real democracy! That is why American pseudodemocracy is a joke. Our criminal govt. must be ashamed going around the world preaching democracy but denying it to its own people!
The Constitution gave all the power to the 3 branches of govt. and assumed they will keep an eye on each other ("checks and balances"). The three branches have become corrupt, usurped power, and all three branches figured out that it is better to conspire, mug and terrorize the nation and totally ignore the owners, the US Citizens. To keep ultimate power in the hands of the people, the founding fathers put in the second amendment. The second amendment, which assumed that millions of armed citizens can easily ouster an illegal and anarchist govt. with equally armed thousands of soldiers, is effete because modern armies have weapons that can kill thousands at a time, so the people will be crushed in any violent uprising against a criminal government.
So they keep passing evil laws the against our country, the public and against our will.
But there is a solution to this govt's war on the nation. It is a constitutional amendment to allow national referenda, so people can pass good laws in the national interest themselves. These laws will supersede laws passed by Congress and cannot be overturned except on constitutional grounds by a supermajority of both houses and unanimous vote of the Supreme Court. The people can then still override it by a 66% vote. Some believe that this right to amend the constitution is inherently vested in the American public. Others suggest an actual amendment. A survey showed that 76% of the public approved the idea.
We can pass a national referendum that all laws that affect the nation as a whole, such as raising taxes, large welfare programs, foreign aid, immigration, bailouts, and raising the debt ceilings, etc. can become law only if finally approved by the people. We will solve 90% of our problems this way.
For eg., see:
We Americans, Europeans, Australians and Canadians need to visit these websites, join these groups, contribute and call radio talk shows, etc. and promote this idea and get the process started soon, before it is too late.
