Afghan Government Corruption

If you pay taxes to the US government you are helping to fund a corrupt government where the relatives of top officials are getting hundreds of millions of dollars fleecing a bank.

What Kroll’s audit found is that on Aug. 31, 2010, the day the Bank of Afghanistan seized Kabul Bank, more than 92 percent of the lender’s loan portfolio — $861 million, or roughly 5 percent of Afghanistan’s annual economic output at the time — had gone to 19 related people and companies, according to the audit.

Is it any wonder the Taliban enjoys considerable support even as US soldiers get killed and injured so these guys can stay in power?

In a society with high rates of consanguineous marriage of course the relatives make out like bandits.

Among the largest beneficiaries were a brother of Mr. Karzai and a brother of First Vice President Muhammad Qasim Fahim who each owned stakes in the bank that had been bought with loans from the bank, according to the audit and regulatory officials.

But Hamid Karzai was such an exotic dresser years ago right after he got into power and came to visit Congress. Sure fooled shallow folks.

Meanwhile, Islamist Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is negotiating to set up a Taliban diplomatic office in Turkey.

But if Turkey and Taliban establish a friendship treaty, then what will that mean for the strategic place of the US in the Middle East? Taliban supports overthrowing the Saudi monarchy to bring all the oil under Islamist control. Turkey is supposed to be the "moderate" Islamist country for the moment, and this is why the US strongly supports Turkey. Thus, in the long run this might be one more step towards a global Islamist block that will be opposed to the US.

The moral of the story: The US and EU have only a few years to invent new energy sources to survive the coming oil embargo.

The USA invented them as long as 60 years ago, we just need to get rid of the people and organizations blocking progress.  We need to start with the NRC and return to something like the AEC.

Electricity can substitute for natural gas in most stationary uses, and natural gas is a substitute for both gasoline and diesel fuel.  NG prices in the $20/million BTU range (about $2.30 per gasoline gallon equivalent, or $2.80/DGE) would guarantee at least a temporary surge in production and massive efforts for conversion and conservation (insulation, etc.).  It would also be the last nail in the coffin of "we have gas, we don't need nuclear".
