France Enacts Tougher Rules For French Citizenship

French Interior Minister Claude Guéant is requiring applicants for French citizenship to show support for French values as a condition for French citizenship. Good for him. Good for France.

Candidates will be tested on French culture and history, and will have to prove their French language skills are equivalent to those of a 15-year-old mother tongue speaker. They will also be required to sign a new charter establishing their rights and responsibilities.

Why import millions of people who are fundamentally illiberal into a liberal polity?

What?

What does the topic French Citizenship Rules for Applicants have to do with illiberals? I thought you criticized liberals.

By illiberals, do you mean Muslims, Arabs, Africans, Republican Americans, Bible Belters or Opus Dei Catholics?

HC said at January 9, 2012 12:49 AM:

So they take a test, big deal. Once they pass they'll never have to think about it again. And does anyone actually think they're gonna make a 70 I.Q. African take a serious test, or that they'll "discriminate" against Africans when they can't pass it? Grow up. Nothing but a point blank banning of non-white immigration (or the banning or near banning of all immigration) is real. Everything else is a con game. This, like all such measures (including the attacks on burquas) is designed to sell mass immigration to the natives, not fix its problems. It's designed to hoodwink Sarkozy voters into believing that he is actually doing something about the destruction of France by pretending that mere tests, mere laws, will prevent France from dissolving once the French become an oppressed minority in their own homeland.

I second HC's comments. This proposal is a whole not of nothing. It will barely slow down the creeping islamicization of France.

Dingo,

Do click thru on the second link.

Seriously, can we add a lie detector portion? That would be the only (somewhat) reliable way to weed out cultural enemies.

And the test should be given as a condition of *residence* not citizenship, otherwise it's just more wool-over-the-eyes - like American pols who claim they're "non-amnesty" would require making illegal aliens go to "the back of the line." Residency should be limited to 3 years or so and not extended unless the individual can prove linguistic and cultural knowledge.

HC & Daniel: Um, France is not the US. Liberté, égalité, fraternité is not a death pact. While some politicians of the Socialist Party have acted in an absolutely vile way towards the likes of Algerian-ethnics who supported the French in Algeria, even they still have some love for real French values- historical, enduring values, not ones made up in the 1960s (despite being opposed to any attempt to spread the values they approve of overseas).

HC said at January 11, 2012 9:49 AM:

Liberté, égalité, fraternité, is the very essence of a suicide pact, particularly the latter two. The Algerians were presumably inculcated with these principles, how's that working out in Algeria? Or the no-go banlieues? Blacks are thoroughly schooled in American principles, ever hear of Detroit? Demographics is destiny, sonny, and when the historic French population is a minority (sometime in this century if changes aren't made soon) the pitiful survivors will see just how ephemeral these "enduring values" are.

commonwealth contrarian said at January 13, 2012 8:21 PM:

The literacy test is a good start, but how do you test for values? People will just say whatever they need to say to get in, it doesn't mean they will go along with it.

PJ Ray said at January 14, 2012 3:23 PM:

Nobody needs to test anybody for values. The only values are the same for everybody: food, housing, health care, education, leisure time, love (if possible), and above all equality.

PJ Ray said at January 14, 2012 3:38 PM:

Yeah, I hope we can finally get rid of all that foreign filth that pees on dead corpses in Afghanistan.

Do you remember the good ol' days when illegal immigrants moved to a foreign country only to look for work? Boy, times have really changed!

Randall Parker said at January 16, 2012 2:45 PM:

PJ Ray,

Not sure what part of what you said is sarcasm. Common values: Nope, definitely not the case. Search on World Values Survey for example. Or compare conservatives and liberals on ethics questionaires in the United States. Or compare psychopaths with non-psychopaths. On my FuturePundit site you can even find stuff about neurological causes of differences in values.

While France may acquire the appropriate to crave that immigrants be chatty in French, acute immigrants to acquire agnosticism is not right.
France needs to apprentice that they they can't accumulate aggravating to canyon laws that bind their muslim population.
Muslims have to be accustomed to abrasion niqab, hijab in schools, and adjure in the streets. No restrictions have to be placed on them, back it violates religious freedom.
France in sum, needs to abound up. Period.
The aggressive abhorrence to Islam in France but aswell in the blow of Europe suggests to me massive stupidity.
