Spam For Crippled Cruise Liner

Passengers stuck on the damaged cruise ship "Carnival Splendor" were fed Spam choppered in by the US Navy.

Helicopters ferried 4,500 pounds of groceries to the stricken ship -- from cases of bottled drinking water to bread rolls and canned Spam -- to keep passengers from going hungry while the luxury liner was without power.

It is somehow fitting that the US Navy, which ventures forth over the seas much like the Vikings of yore, responds to an emergency with wonderful spam!

The USS Ronald Reagan was the source of the supplies. Did Ron eat Spam?

Urgh...Spam. I'd rather die with my dignity intact than eat Spam to survive.
The sharks will appreciate the spam-free taste as they feast on my corpse.

Since he died from Alzheimer's disease, he probably did eat Spam.

But Spam may have saved the world from Adolf Hitler and even stopped the Holocaust, even though it contains pork which makes it un-kosher. This is because Spam was an integral part of the food supplies that the United States was urgently sending to the Soviet army during their desperate battles to stop the German invasion. Apparently, many Russian World War II veterans affectionately remember the American Spam that kept them alive while they were repelling Hitler's army. Spam is a very compact and high calorie food that was absolutely essential for the Russian troops to win the war, without American Spam, maybe Hitler would have successfully taken over the oil fields in the Soviet Union, and with this oil the German tanks could have made it possible for Germany to win WW II. After all, many of the German tanks were sitting idle towards the end of the war because although Hitler had plenty of steel, oil was lacking.

Unfortunately these cans contain sodium nitrite:

Spam won World War II:

SPAM luncheon meat was hailed as the "miracle meat," and its shelf-stable attributes attracted the attention of the United States military during World War II. By 1940, 70 percent of Americans had tried it, and Hormel hired George Burns and Gracie Allen to advertise SPAM on their radio show.
100 million pounds of SPAM were issued as a Lend-Lease staple in the rations to American, Russian, and European troops during World War II, fueling the Normandy Invasion. GIs called SPAM "ham that failed the physical." General Dwight D. Eisenhower confessed to "a few unkind words about it - uttered during the strain of battle."
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as a young woman of 18 working in her family's grocery store, remembers SPAM as a "wartime delicacy."
In Khrushchev Remembers, Nikita Khrushchev credited SPAM for keeping the Soviet Army alive during World War II. "We had lost our most fertile, food-bearing lands, the Ukraine and the Northern Caucasians. Without SPAM, we wouldn't have been able to feed our army."

How about a Spam cookbook:

Exactly! At the beginning of the Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany immediately occupied the Western part of the Soviet Union, where most of the food production used to take place. For this reason, without American Spam, the Stalin would have lost the war, and Hitler would have gained all the Soviet oil fields.

This his why I will discuss this issue with the rabbis in Los Angeles, to figure out a way of elevating the poor pigs from "bad and therefore un-kosher" status to the "sacred and therefore not to be eaten" status. In Israel there are pig farms for the secular Jews and also Christian minorities, but in view of the fact Spam saved the Jewish people from total annihilation, new Israeli legislation should make it illegal to hurt or eat pigs in the Holy Land, elevating these noble creatures to sacred status.

I wonder how many angry letters the cruise company will get complaining about being forced to eat a food that was below them, and demanding reparations.

Probably not many. The passengers got a full refund, paid airfare for their trip home, and an additional cruise. Carnival handled the situation intelligently.

Fried spam and maple syrup, yum.

I've never had spam and I don't think I would like it, but many people insist fried spam is quite good.

Tommy my friend, you're missing out!
Baked Spam with Mac&Cheese is the single best cheap homemade food out there. Add steamed veggies and you've got a meal with the makings of taste royalty. (Oven temp 400. Cut span into strips, place on tinfoil, cook until golden 10-20 min) (veggies can also be soaked in butter)
I wouldn't have believed it myself had i not been forced to eat it in the south, but I've never had something so delicious at such a low cost.

Then again, i haven't exactly taken into account the cost to my body *shrugs*
