Modest Proposal: Protest Day For Geert Wilders
Geert Wilders is on trial this week in the Netherlands for using his basic right to free speech (said right not recognized in the Netherlands) to advocate against the Islamization of the Netherlands. It occurs to me we should choose a day when all bloggers who support a basic right to free speech ought to write posts protesting the prosecution for Geert Wilders.
Since Wilders is on trial this week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I propose Thursday October 7 as the day to write posts excoriating the Dutch government for this unjustified and unfair prosecution of Geert Wilders.
If you are going to do this then write a post immediately that alerts your readers and other bloggers that you will be doing this. Also, tell me in the comments of this post along with a link to your blog. Also, send emails to blogger friends who are likely to be sympathetic to this idea.
I hear George Orwell:
Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.
Update: Many heeded the call.
I want to be a part of this. Do you have any news articles to point to? This is the best I've found on short notice.
I don't think excoriating the Dutch government is very useful. It did not make the decision to prosecute Geert Wilders. In fact, the public prosecution service (Openbaar Ministerie), which is part of the justice department, decided not to prosecute. However, the Amsterdam court, at the request of private citizens, directed the service to proceed with the case, its objections nothwithstanding.
You may want to get after the Netherlands for having a hate speech law, or for having legal procedures that allow courts to order prosecution. But the Dutch government does not deserve to get the rap for the decision itself to go after Wilders.

Well it was just announced today that then-Minister of Justice Hirsch Ballin, who is a wellknown-Wilders hater, was personally involved in starting the prosecution!!
I'm in. My post will be up on 10/7. http://athwart-history.blogspot.com/
I've just put a post at http://nzconservative.wordpress.com/
I've put a post at http://doxraven.blogspot.com/2010/10/not-only-in-holland-but-in-western.html
Good idea. I'm in. I'll link to everyone here as well.
I'm late to the game, but in with a doozy.
How much of this is in support of free speech and how much is in sympathy for opposition to the supposed "Islamization" of the Netherlands?
