Support For Free Speech Will Decline In America
Using GSS data Audacious Epigone finds that in America whites are the ethnic group which most strongly supports free speech. Since whites are a declining portion of the American population (on course to lose majority status) support for free speech is declining and will continue do so.
These are the wages of multiculturalism.
The gaps are relatively small though. A demographic shift that kept those percentages constant might shift the equilibrium towards more speech restrictions (there are a lot already), but it doesn't look like a shift would be extreme. I would worry more about the tails of the distribution, volunteering for or donating to free-speech groups like the ACLU or EFF
What is needed to combat all the left-wing nonsense out there is a less direct approach. For example, I tend to think leftists are correct that a large percentage of those who could be called 'anti immigration' are racially biased. However, that does not make open borders a good idea.
Those who admired Stalin, for example, were probably on the whole nicer people in their personal lives than those who admired Hitler. But this does not change the fact that Stalin was responsible for the deaths of millions, if not tens of millions, of innocent people.
On a slightly different (but related issue) I think the image of the model minority has done a great deal of harm to the political landscape. Probably 95% of those in Western countries with an IQ over 120 believe in some version of it (including myself). The question is how to get people from projecting this image onto peasants with 8th grade educations, and in general people who would be clearly (and correctly, IMO) recognized as undesirable* if they were white and Christian.
*One must also separate how nice these people may seem in person, from the idea that countries would benefit by having tens of millions more of them.
At the most we'll lost 2-3% support for free speech. At the worst, that may mean that it will be a little harder to build adult bookstores next to pre-schools or something.
As the white population proportionally decreases, support for free speech will drop relative to where it would be if, save for the racial shifting, everything else remained the same. But Razib shows that younger people are much more likely to favor allowing controversial types to speak publicly (at least among whites). Does this tendency track with political conservatism, in that speech intolerance tends to increase with age? Maybe, but my guess is it'll be more stable among individuals than political orientation. If that is the case, support for free speech will increase by these GSS measures of it (except for racists--Generation X is more tolerant of them than Gen Y is). The GSS data only go back to 2000, so we're not looking at a whole lot more than a snapshot. And the numbers for non-whites are not sufficient enough to have a lot of confidence in age trends, but they tend to follow that among whites, again with support for the free speech of racists losing some of the support among 18-24 year-olds that it had among people between the ages of 25-40.
Still, these are the wages of multiculturalism--they are pushing against the natural 'gains' the white population has been making on its own.
