Weird Unexpected Educational Impact From Hispanic Immigrant Deluge
A neighbor just told me that his son is going to be disappointed to learn he has to go back to school one week early this year and return to school before Labor Day. Why? The Santa Barbara California school district has added an additional third week to the Christmas break in January. And why did the school board make that decision? Lots of illegals from Mexico take their kids back to Mexico for Christmas. They have some sort of long Christmas holiday in Mexico (12 days of Christmas?) and do not bother to bring their kids back to school after the New Year until the Mexican holiday is completed.
What about parents who want to take longer summer holidays and take their kids places? Too bad. The neighbor's complaint was that in two income families finding a way to take care of the kids for an additional week over Christmas is an imposition. Summer day camps and other programs that help out in the summer don't run over Christmas.
And get this: The school district is thinking about extending the Easter break into 2 weeks for a similar reason. Those illegals also don't keep their kids in school around Easter.
You might that the native Americans who pay the bulk of the taxes would have a say. You might think the schools are run for them and not for the illegals. Not any more.
If this sort of thing can happen in a town where houses all cost more than half a million dollars each then it can certainly happen wherever you live.
we should start a branch of the government to monitor who enters and leaves, maybe even enforce our immigration laws...
i just don't get it, how do they leave and return so easily if they're illegal aliens?
Any citizen uprising? Silence means assent, and the school board probably thought they could get away with it. Many such institutions are like my favorite description of Bill Clinton, that he was like a foofy couch that retains the imprint of the most recent ass.
If a sizable number of American kids were kept out of school until the traditional starting date, that would make an impression.
This is another skirmish in the ongling war for our nation and culture, and should be regarded as such.
Well, I suppose the extra Christmas week could be dedicated to Spanish lessons.
Might as well get to know the new official language early.
I do not watch the local news or read the local newspaper. So I don't know. My guess is that there is no citizen uprising. But most people do not have kids and hence are probably unaware of it.
Iam wondering how they can afford to take holidays annually let alone the rent or afford a mortgage on an house.
How are parents able to "enroll" there kids at school without providing proper documentation and proof in the first place ?
I'm a bit doubtful about this - I'm not saying Randall's neighbour was lying, just that it might be a bit warped by hearsay. The thing that really casts doubt is the implied ability for illegals to reliably move an entire family across the border. My guess is that these aren't illegals - they're simply US citizens visiting the old-country.
The culture is changing. Its democracy in action.
Like it or not.
If they're US citizens, they can obey US laws. Including the school attendance and truancy laws.
"The culture is changing. Its democracy in action."
Democracy? The vast majority of the rank-and-file of both Republicans and Democrats supports some form of greater immigration restriction and greater enforcement of our current laws. Also, if people realized just how bad off Hispanics (on average) were educationally and economically (including in second and later generations), probably close to everyone would be against our current immigration system (if it can be called that) other than the cheap labor and ethnic lobbies, and a handful of hardcore blank slate leftists (e.g. PZ Myers, Atrios, DailyKos, CrookedTimber).
In Kansas, Kris Kobach (who ran for Congress in '04 on strict immigration reform and was brought down by being relentlessly labelled a klansmen and Nazi) had his case dismiseed: Out-of-state students have to pay $5,000 per semester while illegals pay an in-state of $2,000. A district judge says the students didn't face an injury that's concrete and imminent. If this garbage was put to a referendum it'd go 90-10 in favor of forcing illegals to pay at least as much as those living a few miles east of the state line. Hardly democracy in action.
Forget about "democracy." This is tyranny in action.
"Forget about "democracy. This is tyranny in action."
Odd how Bush and the neocons claim we are waging war in Iraq to create democracy in the Arab world, but the democratic rights of US citizens to have their immigration laws enforced are mocked by these same people. It is indeed tyranny not democracy when the massive transformation of communities that accompanies mass immigration is off the table as a topic for democratic debate.
All those against famailies being together during the holidays are clearly in need of more social activities. Does it matter what origin the "neighbor" is from? Who died and appointed you the "human race monitor?" All this energy and use less comments and for what? It appears you are lonely, you dont' have other interests other than being in the "neighbors" business. We are ALL human and bleed the same color. Get over it, live your life to the fullest and allow others to do the same. Promoting hate gets you nowhere.
