Illegal Immigration Comes To Austin Minnesota

George Dahl and Frosty Wooldridge of Austin, Minnesota, population 22,000, describe what a large wave of illegal immigration is doing to a small town in Minnesota.

But ten years ago, something happened in Austin. The meat packing plants began transporting illegal aliens from Texas to work in the plants around Austin. Why? To increase profits. At first, it didnít mean much because the illegal aliens worked at odd jobs. They didnít complain because they feared being deported. Their numbers were so small that the regular workers didnít take notice.

That changed as the years passed. As ten illegals turned into 100 and then into 1000, and now over 3,000, Austin, Minnesota suffers accelerating problems. Once Austin kids skipped to school to learn their ABCís. Today, they experience several foreign languages they canít understand. At first, the teachers had the top kids in the class try to teach the Ďnewí kids how to speak English. But as the food processing plants kept importing more workers and more kids, the teachers suffered the onslaught. Today, classroom teachers must deal with languages, head lice, hepatitis and the threat of tuberculosis because illegal aliens and their children bypass health screening at the border. Last year, eight police officers in Austin tested positive for tuberculosis.

George W. Bush doesn't care. The United States Senate so much does not care it is working on a plan to allow illegal aliens pay in-state college tuition and for a half million illegal alien agricultural workers to to be given legal residency. The US Congress' idea of immigration reform is another large scale amnesty.

Speed citizenship for immigrants in the armed forces.

Give work permits to illegal immigrants who pay taxes and study English.

Legalize tens of thousands of high school students, some of whom discover only when applying for college financial aid that their parents brought them here illegally.

Replete with an Orwellian title, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2003 is a nightmare for the larger public. But it is seen by sponsor Orrin Hatch and other Senate Republicans as a way to bid for the Hispanic vote while simultaneously catering to business constituencies that want ever cheaper labor without the inconvenience of having to relocate to India. That the act does not serve the interests of the public is really irrelevant in the minds of many Senators as the Republican politicians expect their voters to stick with them given that the other choice is the Democrats who are even more pro-unskilled immigration. The Democrats correctly understand that the less skilled and lower wage Hispanic voters are going to reliably continue to vote overwhelmingly for the Donkey for many decades to come. The Republicans are deluding themselves while shafting a substantial portion of their base and the larger public.

The liberal press coverage of the Nightmare Act is of course overwhelmingly positive as demonstrated above. It is full of sob stories of people who will be benefitted if they can become legal because then they can pay less for college (since the taxpayers will pay more), get access to government subsidies for housing (courtesy of the taxpayers), and get more access to medical care and other social services (again, guess who pays).

Racial lobbyist organization National Council of La Raza (La Raza means "The Race") president Raul Yzaguirre thinks this is not a partisan piece of legislation.

''Passage of the Dream Act is not a partisan issue and should be a priority for Congress,'' said Raul Yzaguirre, president of the National Council of La Raza, one of the many groups lobbying in support of the bill. ``It unleashes the vast potential of thousands of young students.''

Who is he kidding? Or, wait, maybe he is right. If both the Democratic and Republican Parties are willing to betray the American public then betrayal is not a partisan issue.

Providing support for US Senate efforts to shaft the American public Mexican President Vicente Fox and other officials of the Mexican government put in a lot of time lobbying in the United States.

MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Vicente Fox begins a three-day tour of U.S. border states Tuesday in a visit he said Monday he hoped would encourage discussion of immigration issues

Fox claims that his Mexican workers are incredibly valuable. If that is the case then why can't his economy find higher paying jobs for them to do? Why is he so eager to ship them up here? It saves him money. His workers send some money back to the US and they use US government services instead of Mexican government services. When someone tries really hard to tell you something is beneficial for you that ought to be a warning sign that it isn't.

Update: Here's another example of press bias on illegal immigration.

Under federal law, all public colleges and universities, including community colleges, must charge immigrants who are not legal residents the higher out-of-state tuition rate.

At Miami Dade College, that means students must pay $197.50 per credit compared to the $56.50 rate for in-state students. College officials say there are about 264 undocumented students paying the higher tuition.

Note the Orwellian terminology. Undocumented? What if we documented the fact that each illegal is not supposed to be here? Would they still be undocumented? Some of the "undocumented" illegal aliens have driver's licenses that they have obtained illegally. Of course, in California illegals can now get driver's licenses. So they have identity documents that establish who they are. Or what about illegals who have passports from their countries of origin, how are they "undocumented"? After all, they have documents that demonstrate their identity. It is just that their presence in the United States is illegal. The liberal press and politicians have shifted en masse to calling illegals undocumented.

US Republican Senators want to stick us with higher cost government.

"The National Research Council study in 1997 concluded that each native household in California was paying $1,178 a year in state and local taxes to cover services used by immigrant (legal and illegal) households," writes Fred Dickey in an exposť for the Los Angeles Times.

"Once transfer payments like welfare, education and health care are factored in, immigration becomes a net cost," confirms Ed Rubenstein, a public-policy statistician and president of ESR Research Economic Consultants. "California immigrants now receive about $9.3 billion more in state expenditures than they pay in state taxes. ...

The Republican Party's leader are willing to force the rest of us to pay more in taxes, lower wages, crime, crowding, higher housing prices, and pollution as long as they can pursue the Hispanic vote.

In my point of view I think that the DREAM act is a very good idea. This way many students are going to have the oppurtunity to advance their education. There are many illegal immigrant students who are very hard workers, they go through a difficult struggle to get to a higher place in life. That's why I don't think that they should be seen nor judged different just because of their nationality, we are all equal.

This is alarming news that the politicians are colluding to favor the foreigner at the expense of the citizen. The media seem to be saying : if this be treason make the least of it. A country with a $500-billion trade deficit can't be playing lady bountiful trying to send the third world to college; how irresponsible can these statesmen become before somebody says something. The typical immigrant of the last two decades is on net public subsidy; tens of millions of them (out of the last 25 million) when, as said above, the educational expenses are included. If the facts are anti-foreigner or anti-immigrant, then that's what they are. This sort of diversity is bad for us, it is alternative-welfare grabbing. It is the pro-diversity who keep these issues continually before us, with their irrational demands for allowing further monstrous acts of aggression against the net taxpayer.

Anna said at July 29, 2004 7:58 PM:

What if this happened to you: You grow up being a happy American child, you do pretty well in school despite your parents lack of money and constantly being uprooted every couple of years. When you become a freshman in high school, all your friends want to get their driving permits, so when you ask your parents for the papers needed to get the permit, something terrible happens. Your parents tell you about your ďillegalĒ status in the country and if this isnít shocking enough, this might be the first time they tell you werenít even born in this country. You donít know what to do .Suddenly you are an ďillegal,Ē a criminal and you didnít even know it.
You canít try to obtain legal residency because being under 21, you fall under your parents undocumented status, thus are unable to make your status legal. What do you do? Do you go to your country of birth despite having to leave your parents behind, being only 15, not knowing the language, not knowing the culture, not knowing anyone in the country, and most importantly not even remembering ever being in that country? Or do you stay with your parents and the only country you have ever known and hope no one finds out. Anyone who says they choose option one is a liar.
The DREAM act allows high achievers from this group to be ELIGILBE for legal status. The children have three options, 1) Join the armed forces 2) Got to college for 2 years or 3) Perform 900 hours of community service. Plus they must not have a criminal history. The bill also allows states the OPTION to charge these kids instate tuition for college.
Some arguments against this bill
1) US citizens form out of state have to pay out of state tuituion, so why should these kids get resident rates?
-First, the states have the OPTION of charging resident rates to these kids from their state, they donít necessarily have to.
-Despite popular myths, MOST UNDOCUEMTNED PEOPLE DO PAY TAXES and thus states have the option of extending a service to a taxpayer who is already paying for it.

2) These kids will take spots in colleges that could have gone to US citizens.
-No offense but if you got lower grades and test scores than a poverty stricken teen who most likely had to work to support their family for minimum wage, lived in the projects, moved around a lot, and lived in constant fear of deportation, then the blame can only be placed on yourself for not doing as well that that teen.
*This country was nice to enough to give you a free education and you have the nerve to ask for special treatment because you were born here! Bullshit kid, that undocumented child who got into that school was a much better investment than you ever were. I want my money back, you whiny brat. (Donít forget, that undocumented kidís parent also paid taxes for YOUR education as well as for their own children).
3) This will only encourage more illegal immigration
-This bill only includes kids who have been here for at least five years and are above 12 years of age. Anyone who enters in the future and even children brought here within the last five years DO NOT QUALIFY.
4) They are illegal, they shouldnít be here in the first place.
-True, but they really didnít really have a say in that. Do you send a child to jail because they waited in the car while their parents robbed a convenient store? Of course not! The child had no idea what was going on. Sending them to a strange country where they donít know anyone, the language, or the culture is cruel. They are being punished for their parentís actions.
-DREAM gives these children an OPPURTUNIY to EARN legal residency. It is not simply given to them. (Wish all kids in America had to do this)

Randall Parker said at July 29, 2004 8:10 PM:

Anna, I read your argument as a reason to round up all the illegals and deport them before they raise kids here who are not US citizens. We don't want those kids to suffer from a confused identity or a sense of second class citizenship. No, such a fate would be cruel. So out they all go before they spend too many years here. Let their formative years take place in the country for which they have citizenship.

Also, you are ignoring the fact that all universities discriminate against white kids to provide slots for Hispanic kids. The white kids have to score much higher on tests to get into the same colleges and universities.

As for their paying taxes: Yes, but much less in taxes than they receive in benefits. Low income people are net beneficiaries of government services. Low income people generate more costs than they pay in taxes.

"DREAM" is a nightmare. Time to deport all the illegals and build a barrier on the border with Mexico to keep them out.

I have only lived in the Austin area for the last 2 years and I am already sick of the immigrants in this city. Coming from a small town in Iowa, even I can see the burdon these people have put on the community. It seems obvious that the mayor(Bonnie) won't do anything to upset the ones responible for this. I am always hearing people screaming about it, but no-one is doing. I stand behind Mr. Dahl in his fight to remove the problem. The city has an alrming crime rate increase since these people have been here, and the childrens education skills also suffer. The crime is getting to the point that my girlfriend has me walk with her on the trails for protection. That is just down right pathetic.
How many of you have gone into a retail store to do some shopping and are repelled by having to hear someone yelling at someone else in another language? Not to mention the diseases they bring in. How would you feel if your child came home from school one day sick, just to find out that they have a disease our doctors can't cure. The reason they have this is because an immigrant came across the border with no health screen. Are we willing to risk our childrens futures and quality of life for these people?I THINK NOT!!!

The ignorance and discrimination shown by the coments of this web site not only amazes me, but again saddens me.

As an immigrant myself (who came here legally and has remained so - not that that is your business!) I came to the US with hopes for a better future and a better life in general. Nonetheless, since 9/11 all I have found out is that the US is no better than any other country. It is filled with ignorance and fear of difference such as the one displayed in this page. For a country that is supposed to be made of immigrants there is no respect for the immigrants exploited in this country on a regular basis.

May I remind you that illegal aliens only take jobs that no US citizen wants, may I remind you that without these "aliens" restaurants in many cities in the US would collapse and farms here in MN would be stuck without workers, may I reming you that you are talking about children!!! Children!!! Children that are not guilty of the fear of foreigners that many Americans have due to the biased media that influences this country.

I bet that after reading this you want to ask me - Well if you feel the US is so bad, why don't you leave? To that question I always answer that I feel I can make a difference in the US and contribute to changing this country. Since the US is supposed to be a world leader changing things here may mean changing the world in general including my own country. Nonetheless, in a few years I do hope to leave because it is too painful and angering to deal with people like you, who write such hateful commnents about people you don't even know.

A concerned non-citizen.

I cannot believe some of the things that have been said on this website...It really breaks my heart to hear the hate in so many of your voices. To those of you that are so against having immigrants working in our country: You need to stop complaining about all fo the problems that you feel they are causing and think about how they really are preventing you from having to the horrible jobs they must do. You all sound so stuck-up and close minded. Open up your eyes and take a look around! Soon, all of you white people are going to be the minority in this country, so my advice to you is too stop complaining about something you cannot change and put that energy into something more productive.

Jesus Diaz,

Immigrants from Mexico have a "true rich culture"? Okay, then they should go back to Mexico and live in that "true rich culture". Why put up with being around white folks when you can live in a supposedly superior culture?

What Mexico really has is poverty, crime, government corruption, and backwardness. I do not want to import all that into the United States.

Yes, we made America into the place that is so appealing to the rest of the world. Why don't those who want to come here improve their own society instead? Simple answer: They lack the ability to do so.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Awhile back I was at a church in Minneapolis called "the Sacred Heart." That church membership is 100% illegal immigrant. The priest, giving the mass in Spanish, compared the INS to the devil. It was pure blasphemy. I was so angered I walked out of the mass. At the end of mass, there was dozens of buses lined up, and the priest and church members were encouraging everyone to go to downtown St. Paul to have a march for the "rights" of illegal immigrants. I approached the priest and told him that he should not be using his church as a way to mobilize illegals to protest. He responded that illegals only come here because they are starving and need work. (as a note, if a foreigner protest in Mexico, he or she is immediately deported)

Let's think about what the priest told me. First of all, most illegals didn't suffer from hunger in their country of origin. Yes, they are poor, but if they work they can eat and live an o.k. life. If it were true that illegals needed money and work so badly, why is it that you can go to Mystic Lake Casino on any day of the week, and find that almost 30% of the people gambling are illegals. Why those poor souls, they came to the U.S. because they were impoverished and need food for money, but in their free time they gamble their little hearts away. Hmmmm.

TOP TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT (sarcastic but true):

1. You can get drunk and rear end someone and drive away without ever worrying about getting prosecuted. Why? Because illegals buy their cars with cash and don't do a title transfer. So, if the plate is run, it shows up as registered to someone else. (note, ask any sheriff if he has run into a lot of drunk illegals driving and you'll see I am right)

2. You can avoid motor vehicle tax. Why? because you don't have to pay the deputy registrar anything because you don't do a legal title transfer.

3. You don't have to pay your debts (to the government or anyone else). Why? Because as soon as a debt collector comes after you, you can change the last digit of "your" social security number and shuffle your name around a bit and viola-- a new illegal identity is born. (you think this isn't done a lot, it is done all the time and very intentionally)

4. You don't have to buy car insurance or medical insurance. Why? Refer to # 3. You can just go to a hospital, incur debt, and create a new fake identity.

5. You don't have to pay the INS $$ like the legal immigrants. You can come up here faster, and get access to government services with your fake identity.

6. Even though legal immigrants aren't allowed access under law to welfare until after having worked for years in the U.S., illegals get welfare all the time. And the State and Federal governments will help you get the welfare by providing services in your own language. ( In fact, Hennepin County puts commercials on Channel 13 (the Spanish channel in the twin cities) encouraging illegal Hispanic women to get their free pap smear and mammogram- free of charge paid for by Hennepin County tapxayers. WHAT A DEAL!)

7. Your children get to be citizens, no questions asked.

8. If anyone questions your legal status and wants to get tough on illegal immigration, just call them racist, compare yourself to Martin Luther King, and protest in downtown St. Paul. The Catholic church will line up free transportation and compare the INS to the devil for you to make you feel good about your endeavors. (oh, but we aren't attachking races, are we? We are just trying to make sure the law in enforced. Its not our fault most of 'ya are from Mexico.

9. If you come up here without your wife, you can have a girlfriend up here as well and the wife won't know. Lot's of great sex for you after you enjoy the wine you bought with your food stamps.

10. You make Minnesota's economy flourish, 'cause we all know that 10 years ago when you weren't around we were all just a bunch of poor bastards just like you. Thanks for your help!

The person who wrote this website is right. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE. Write your congressmen (or maybe not) Maybe we should create our own minutemen group up here in Minnesota?

I am quite dissatisfied over Pawlenty. Remember a few months ago how he was going to create a task force to stop illegal immigration? Well Mr. Governor, what the hell? I haven't seen an ounce of progress.

HEY, if anyone wants I could have the top ten translated to Spanish so that our illegal friends know all the options available. Post a thread and let me know!

I grew up in Austin Minnesota, 1957 to 1975. My father worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. Austin was a division point for the Milwaukee. The rest of the town worked for Hormel or one of the associated industries that supplied Hormel, American Can, and a cardboard box manufacturing company whose name now escapes me.

The town had a population of about 30,000 then and 26 bars within city limits. People drank because most of the work at the plant was awful but high paying and most of the male population were veterans of the Second World War. Their pay was based upon their work team performance so for example a bacon slicer in 1967 in the top team could make 17,000 dollars. (about 110,000 in todays dollars)The Austin workers were considered the most productive in the Hormel chain. Many of them were of Scots-Irish descent from the Ozarks and though of "hill-billy" roots were of long descent from families who had fought the Indians before the United States existed and who had ancestors who had fought in every war since the founding of the nation when they decided to throw out the King of England's government.

Things were not all wonderful and rosy in those days but a boy who grew up there learned that an American never quits and that American Servicemen never surrender because our ancestors had built and fought for and defended our common government and our nation despite what the big shots in Hormel said.

My father who was a Korean War vet worked under superiors who were all Americans of German ancestry (whose ancestors came here to escape the continous military service required by the Kaiser and have a new life as Americans)who had all served as Officers in the American Army in Northern Europe during World War Two. I overheard some of their late night discussions when I was a boy near the stairwell. After the Battle of the Bulge they did not take any German soldiers prisoner until Germany surrendured because of what the SS had done to their fellow American troops, many of whom were shot by the SS because they were Jewish or Black.

Most of the people of Austin were proud of their collective contribution to WWII especially in often even perverse admission of SPAM a product that was sent to every corner of the world, from Siberia to Greenland, China to Australia, from the Islands of the Carribean to the Islands of the South Pacific and the remote Aleutians of Alaska, probably even carried off in flying saucers. Their were bulletin boards were letters from foreign dignitaries were displayed thanking Hormel and Austin for Spam, from Halei Selassie of Ethiopia, Kruschev of the Soviet Union, Eisenhower, General of NATO before he was President.

And out of all that an attitude that you weren't entitled to a damn thing that you didn't fight for.
