California Public Angry About Illegal Alien Immigration

Georgie Anne Geyer reports on a California recall exit poll which Frank Luntz of The Luntz Research Companies conducted for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIRUS) in which he discovered mounting public anger at the effects of illegal immigration.

"We found more anger, more fear of the future, more rage than I had seen since the Newt Gingrich campaign in 1994," Frank Luntz began. "People historically went to California to experience something very special. There was always more hope and more future there – except this year. They are so fed up with traffic congestion, and hospitals where they don't get care and everyone coming across the border, that the anger was so great they were actually punching the voting machines.

"There is a rejection of the status quo that may move eastward; it is a rejection of politics and of principles that have failed and that have fundamentally destroyed the state – and immigration is at the top of it all. The public in California has decided it's gone too far, and they want a change."

Since the elected politicians (including, alas, Arnold Schwarzenegger) are going to continue to ignore the will of the majority on immigration the state ballot initiative process is the best way forward. Fortunately, almost half of the states have state ballot initiative processes and two states that border on Mexico (Arizona and California) do. The results of this poll suggest a number of changes that state ballot propositions could bring about with regard to immigration policy including repeal of laws that make it easy for illegals to function in American society and the requirement that state and local law enforcement officials detain for deportation any illegals they encounter. Another attractive option that would pay for itself many times over would be the construction of a border barrier on the border with Mexico.

The detailed results of the Luntz/FAIRUS poll are on-line:

16. Under California state law, voters have the ability to block a law passed by the legislature and signed by the governor through the referendum process. A referendum to block the law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses has been proposed for the March 2004 ballot. If such a referendum were to appear, would you be very likely, somewhat likely, somewhat unlikely, or very unlikely to support it?

45% VERY LIKELY
17% SOMEWHAT LIKELY
8% NO OPINION
11% SOMEWHAT LESS LIKELY
14% MUCH LESS LIKELY
5% DON'T KNOW/REFUSED

17. State law now allows illegal immigrants who reside in California to be eligible for reduced, in-state tuition rates at the University of California and other state run colleges and universities. In your opinion, should illegal immigrants be eligible for in-state tuition rates?

73% NO
18% YES
9% DON'T KNOW/REFUSED

So voter referendums on revoking driver's licenses for illegals and to take away in-state tuition for illegals would both pass. But those are far from the only illegal alien issues on which referendums could easily pass:

20. The State of California and many jurisdictions throughout California prohibit local police and sheriffs departments from sharing information about suspected illegal immigrants with federal immigration authorities. Do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose such a measure?

7% STONGLY SUPPORT
12% SOMEWHAT SUPPORT
14% NO OPINION
19% SOMEWHAT OPPOSE
44% STRONGLY OPPOSE
4% DON'T KNOW/REFUSED

21. The State of California and many jurisdictions throughout California prohibit local police and sheriffs departments from detaining suspected illegal immigrants with federal immigration authorities. Do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose such a measure?

9% STONGLY SUPPORT
14% SOMEWHAT SUPPORT
12% NO OPINION
17% SOMEWHAT OPPOSE
42% STRONGLY OPPOSE
6% DON'T KNOW/REFUSED

The latter two questions cry out for a voter referendum that would order state and local law enforcement authorities to round up illegal aliens. Such a referendum would most likely win.

There are many more legal and policy changes about the handling of illegal aliens that would stand a decent chance of winning on a state-wide ballot in the state of California. For instance, all state and local government agencies which encounter illegal aliens could be required to report them to the policy or to federal authorities. Also, state governments could maintain a database of legal Social Security numbers and require all employers to check potential hires against the database for an illegal Social Security number with the requirement of hiring only those with legal numbers and the requirement that all illegal Social Security numbers and the details about their users should be reported.

More ideas: Allow any employer who loses business to another business that employs lower paid illegals to bring suit for damages against the employer that hires illegals. Require any government contractor found employing illegals to lose their government contract as a result. The state governments could provide a financial reward to anyone who reports an illegal for using Medicaid or some other government service. The financial reward would cost the taxpayers money but would be paid back many times over with the savings in spending for government services.

They're illegal as in not legal and here you are giving them money. It's a no wonder the country has a trillion dollar deficet. We should quit supporting them and send on a one way trip back to where they came from. Wake up America. We the people (the legal citizens any way) have the power to send them home. So get off your lazy butts and take a stand

HI ! my name is Carlos I read your article I Think we need to do something about it I have made some searches my self and I have found out 95% of mexican in US are elligal I dont say this because I don’t like Mexicans or illegal aliens or because I don’t like Spanish people : I am 100% Spanish my self ,but we have to see in the other hand there are approximately 9 million unemployed Americans in the US. These same Americans will pay taxes out of their unemployment insurance checks to provide services for illegal aliens.Over 95% (nearly 1 million) of deportable illegal aliens caught entering the US without inspection in 2002 were from Mexico.
How many weren't caught?
We have over 300,000 new illegal immigrants each year, the INS is finding and removing fewer than 50,000. The figures show that between October 1996 and January 2000, the number of illegal immigrants grew from about 5.8 million to about 7 million, an increase of more than 300,000 annually 95% of this are from Mexico.we need to worry about this issue
Let me give you an example why to worry :
if your roof is in need of repair, don't you start with the biggest hole? The biggest hole in this country 'roof' right now is Mexico. The leak needs to be fixed because the flood created has lowered the payscales in unskilled and semi-skilled workers in America.
However these days when people look up and see this leak and suggest action be taken they are called things like 'racist'. they call me racist trader come on i'm spanish guy born in Honduras came to US when I was 14 years old to STUDY number one thing in Life , I was a pernament resident now i'm US citizen going to school at Arizona State Univercity , I old my life to this Country not Honduras I apreciate this Country to let it me be here and be somebody so how i'm a trader? and now we have the driver licenses issue illegal immigrants want drivers licenses and want the right to vote , what part of the word elligal you all don't understand ?

I read your article and I believe that further research has to be made. The US is seen as a nation of freedom, hope, equality, and none the less a nation of invinsible capitalism. It is no wonder why many choose to migrate to the US. Illegal immigrants are always used as the topic of justification for the deficts of state and if we take it to the extreme our nation. They are accused of taking our jobs, lowering our wages, crowding hospitals, benefiting from tax payers, and an endless list of accusations. Truth is that as it is, undocumented people cannot apply to any job for the obvious reason. Many work in the most inhumane conditions with a miserable salary, inferior to minimum wage after long and extrenous hours of labor. In fact if you think about it how many thousands and millions of dollars are possessed by the IRS as a result of the "undocumented" not claiming their tax earned money because they fear being deported. They remain in these inhumane conditions under threat of being deported. Other jobs that "they" are depriving us from are the fields and maquiladoras which I am sure that not many of us are eager to work those positions. The INS has minimize their roundup trips to factories for the purpose of discovering and deporting the "undocumented". They are now working on a basis of dont ask dont tell. This is in great deal because the INS themselves are now realizing their (illegals) contribution to the economy.Another issue that was addressed was that the undocumented were crowding hospitals. IF you research, you will note, that nearly 75% of the "illegals" do not receive medical attention. Meaning they do not visit hospitals or clinics because of the same reason that I have been expressing throughout these brief lines: fear of deportation. In short we need to stop blaming the "undocumented" for deficits that have existed long before the "illegals" became an issue. Our deficits have been products of globalization and past appointed officials that made the wrong choice. I leave you with this interesting fact: Our grandios nation are in part made up of people that think themselves patriotic yet violate our constitution, think themselves righteous yet their thoughts and actions violate our bill of rights. An outstanding number of people that steal or jobs, minimize our wages, crowd our hospitals, benefit from our tax money are on a daily basis victims of those that think of themselves rightous and patriotic. They are deprived from their civil rights that everyone is entitled to but for some reason are patronage seems to blind us from reality.

I think that it is unfair for people to come into the country without authorization (ILLEGALLY). The truth of the matter is that many of the people who come here are from Mexico. Despite the fact that they know that coming here illegally is a crime, they are not deterred because California is considered a safe-haven for them. Let's think about it, they can get free healthcare, take a job from a tax paying citizen, and receive a free education. All the while there is no requirement for them to assimilate into the culture (speak English), and they demand rights as if they have completed the LEGAL citizenship requirements. Sympathizers have said that the jobs are jobs that citizens won't do, this is an unfounded statement and simply not true. The business owners use this excuse because they don't want to pay fair wages, and yes, they want to take advantage of illegal aliens. However, this is at the expense of the citizen who is forced out of an opportunity. Also, did you know that if you are a childless citizen who has paid taxes and get's laid off, or is temporarily unemployed you cannot receive public Medi-Cal, but an illegal alien with children can. Now that's simply wrong.

I commend the volunteers of the Minuteman Project who are taking a stand on this issue since our federal government won't lift a finger. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is suppose to investigate, detain, and deport illegal aliens but they don't do a good job at it. In addition, Mexican and Latino lawmakers violate the laws they have sworn to uphold by promoting legislation that flies in the face of federal immigration law, i.e. illegal aliens can get in-state tuition, but a citizen from another state must pay out-of-state tuition and now they want drivers licenses and every right that citizens have. In reality these legislators believe that California belongs to them and they are poised to do everything they can to "take it back". Most of their efforts and support goes specifically to Mexican and Latino centered programs. I see this as a conflict of interest and dishonest.

In conclusion, all people who wish to come here should respect the immigration process and anyone who does not should be detained, and deported immediately.

This is all academic. The voting process has gotten law abiding American citizens no-where with this issue. Hostile foreign invaders like Petronilo above think they have a right to this land. Seriously misguided liberals like Mari think that the way to help these people out of there plight at home is to let them come here and exploit the hard work of this nation. This is because these ignorant people do not understand human nature, morality or common sense. Enemies of America like Petronilo think they will be succesful through subversive activities and by slowly out-breeding us. To what end? So they can turn California and the rest of America into the sewer that Mexico is? Mexico has plenty of opportunity to thrive and grow. There are vast natural resources to take advantage of, not to mention thousands of miles of beautiful coastline that could bring in billions of dollars of tourist trade. But foreign invaders like Petronilo think it is easier and better to simply go North and steal from Americans, instead of working towards improving his own country like Americans have. These people are too lazy and cowardly to overthrow the corrupt Mexican government that hinders their freedom and progress.

The other thing scumbags like petronilo and Mari do not understnd is that at some point, hard working, tax paying and otherwise law abiding citizens of the USA will finally realize that voting doesn't work, that politicians are delibeartely undermining the strentgh and sovereingty of the USA and that we will have to take action ourselves - just as our Founding Fathers did. At some time in the near future, civil war will become a reality in California and then spread to other states where Mexicans have destroyed the quality of life for Americans. What you stupid illegal foriegn invaders do not understand is what makes Americans Americans. But you will when we are using our Second Amendment rights to take this country back by force. We will see how smart you think you are and just how weak the American spirit really is when we are standing in the streets shooting your illegal, subversive, foreign invader asses. It's only a matter of time. Real Americans will not tolerate your your arrogance and contempt forever. Not gonna' happen.

Californians are already sick and tired of the traffic and the diminished quality of life that is now a reality here because of low-breed Mexicans who refuse to assimilate or raise their standards - to become American. These people all dream of "going home someday" and are sending their illegally gotten American money home for just that reason. This is by the way, Mexico's second largest GNP. The unchecked influx of immigrants has led to an artificially inflated housing market that precludes honest hard working single families from being able to afford a home because those houses are going to multi-family groups of illegals who lie about their income on "stated income" loan applications. When real Americans who could barely afford a house start losing their homes because rates on their "interest only" loans start going up - that's when the shit will hit the fan.

Illegal foreign invaders would be well advised to either leave the country now or find a place to buy Kevlar. You'll need it.

Fasten your seatbelts, Petronilo. You have no idea what you are about to tap into.

Adios.

When my parents came to this country from the Philippines, they did so LEGALLY! Respecting the Law of the Land is the basic tenant of being a member of this great “American Experiment.” The reason they came to this country was to become AMERICANS and to weave themselves into the fabric of American culture. They didn't try to force America to recognize their native culture and nationality, and insist opportunities be made available to them, like all these illegals and their seditious supporters insist upon. I am personally offended by all these people demonstrating as if they’ve earned the right to do so. We have allowed millions of people in to our country that hold more allegiance to their ethnicity, culture and home countries than they do to our United States. What's more offensive is that they claim to be representing me based solely on that fact that my skin is brown too. The can kiss my English only, red white and blue ass!

Since the huge influx of illegals after the amnesties in the 70's and 80's, the neighborhood I grew up in has been reduced to a graffiti ridden, gang infested, 3rd World Hispanic slum. I don't blame any of the white families, many of whom had lived in that part of San Francisco for generations for taking part in the Great White Flight. Hell, I left too. Property values steadily decrease while crime increases and thriving businesses on Mission Street have been replaced with “no habla” street peddlers, “Hecho en Mexico” discount stores and shops that sell cheaply made sportswear in the colors preferred by the local gang set.

All of us Americans have been lulled in to a politically correct coma. We were shamed by the media, academic and civic leaders for wanting the American culture to thrive. All the while they’re lining their pockets with the profits they gained by selling out “our” America to foreign nationals and their governments. Government, corporate and academic elites don’t have to deal the rapid decline of the quality of life that we middle Americans are experiencing today. They are not impacted with the closure of hospitals that have swamped by non paying illegals and societal degenerates. They are not concerned with rising health care costs spurred by failed social experiments. They don’t have to wait for delayed or sub-standard emergency services because our police and fire/medical personnel are stretched thin in areas where “La Raza” thrives.

Be warned of these rapidly evolving events. I urge all Americans to do your homework and research subversive and seditious “cultural” organizations like La Raza (The Race) and Mecha. They advocate and support the establishment of Aztlan, the mythical Chicano homeland that encompasses the American Southwest and California. I urge all businesses, especially in the construction, restaurant and hospitality industry to hire US Citizens and or legal residents. And to middle America…buy a gun to defend your homes and nation. Because when racially motivated unrest arises, the government will not help you.

I am an American Hispanic and DO NOT SUPPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS! They have destroyed California. I have NOTHING in common with these people, so DO NOT think all Hispanics support illegal aliens just because they are hispanic.

Illegal aliens in California have taken thousands of jobs from Americans, they don't speak English, they destroy our schools. They MUST GO!!!!!!!!!

Marie said at January 11, 2009 6:21 AM:

If only they would come in the right way. My grandparents came here from Italy legally. They went through Ellis Island. Moved to Phildelphia and learned English and became citizens. They both had jobs and paid their taxes. Even though they are Italians they consider themselves American first and foremost.
