Border Patrol Told Not To Stop Illegal Aliens In City Of San Diego

San Diego area Border Patrol agents are not to stop illegals once the illegals have made it further into the city.

A directive barring Border Patrol agents from stopping suspected illegal immigrants on city streets is throwing the 1,600 San Diego-area agents into turmoil.

The directive, contained in an internal memo last week from William T. Veal, Border Patrol chief in San Diego, said "agents are not authorized to conduct any interior enforcement or city patrol operations in or near residential areas or places of employment."

The directive resulted from a series of recent, highly publicized incidents, the best-known of which occurred Aug. 2, when a Mexican family of five on their way to the Mexican Consulate was stopped by Border Patrol agents within a block of their destination.

The Border Patrol is being told they can only patrol right on the border. Even if they see a criminal on a San Diego city street who they know has been deported before they are powerless to stop that person.

Be clear on this: the Bush Administration supports this policy. If you disagree with George W. Bush on this then send the President an email.

Update: The US federal government doesn't just want to prevent the Border Patrol from stopping illegal aliens away from the Border. The Bush Administration also wants to stop private groups from stopping illegal aliens from entering the United States.

Chris Simcox, editor of the Tombstone Tumbleweed and leader of Civil Homeland Defense, or CHD, told WorldNetDaily local Border Patrol supervisors and agents say their orders to contact the Cochise County Sheriff's Department whenever his volunteers hand over illegal aliens came straight from Washington, D.C.

The Bush Administration is responding to pressure from Hispanic groups that lobby for illegal immigration and for the extension of more rights of citizenship to illegals.

Update: As for whether the illegal immigration can be stopped, the short answer is Yes! A barrier fence on our border with Mexico would cost much less than one year's cost to the US taxpayer for medical treatments given to illegal aliens. To appreciate just how much the US government has sabotaged and undermined its own enforcement of immigration laws and put a stop to the use of effective policies to get control of illegal immigration see the post Can Immigration Law Be Enforced? for infuriating examples of how federal policy makers have sabotaged enforcement mechanisms.

Let me see if I understand. The Mexican Consul says arresting illegal aliens is "an act of bad faith" and pitches a complaint. The US government says, "Okay, we'll stop." Do I have it right?

I. P., Yes, as strange as it sounds, you do. We live in an increasingly surreal world. Though its more a nightmare than a dream.

Im just so frustrated with our government on this issue. It is almost as if a parasite has landed on the country and injected it with a toxin which makes the host unable to move or protect itself.I am seriously considering moving.

The real problem with illegals is this: They do the jobs that Americans refuse to do for much less money, and therefore, if they weren't there to do them, costs would be hugely inflated. Either we are going to have to learn to live with illegal immigrants, or we are going to have to make the legal immigration system much less complicated.

However, here we run into the problem of deterring terrorists. Nonetheless, there is evidence saying that terrorists are making it over the southern border. If that is the case, then we would be much better off with a better legal immigration system and tighter border security, than one or the other.

Randall Parker said at February 20, 2004 9:39 AM:

Debater, There are no jobs being done by illegals that Americans refuse to do. In the areas of America where there are few illegals the society still works. Trash gets collected. Roads get patched.

Increase the supply of some type of labor as illegals do and the result is lower prices. As for whether the absence of illegals would "hugely" inflate prices: That is unlikely. The demand for manual low-skilled labor has dropped to the point where those laborers get paid little. That means they are literally not producing much of economic value. The average minimum wage job really is worth a tenth of the economic value of jobs that pay 10 times as much. The higher wage workers are creating most of the economic value.

To put it another way: If the wages of the bottom tenth doubled it would probably raise costs to the rest of us by 1 percent or something on that order. That is because the bottom tenth is making such a small fraction of the total amount of wages earned in the first place.

Most or all of the Illegal Immigrants if they don't work for cash, they claim many dependents that they don't have so they pay as little tax as possible. AT the same time they use a fake
social security cards.A LEGAL CITIZEN WOULD BE IN JAIL. And the cost for the criminal acts and prosecution. Then add welfare to that. When they cross the Border that is the first of many criminal acts they all do.I SAY SEND THEM BACK WHERE TYEY CAME FROM!!!

I believe illegal immigrant's shouls be left alone. i mean mexicans are good people they come to this country to work. If they work jobs that nobody else want's to work in it's a good thing. illegal immigrant's get no free stuff they work, pay taxes just like everyone else and fake social security numbers don't work since they are checked so no bullshit on them claming dependants since the irs checks this kind of stuff out i'm anglo and i belive illegal immigrants should have more rights since they work hard i mean nobody pay's for their food or house or clothing so why do people feel like they can decide what they are and aren't able to do

Nancy said at June 12, 2004 6:43 PM:

immigrant's are OK, why do people hate them? they work for thei own stuff so why bother them they don't bother nobody. immigrants who work hard and pay taxes should be legalized. i hate those stupid racist hicks who don't have a life and only cause is to ruin peoples lifes....

We pay the medical care, schooling for their kids, medical care for their kids, school lunch subsidies, schooling, police, and other costs for illegal aliens. They do not pay much in taxes and generate costs that are far higher than the taxes they pay.

Need I remind you, immigrants founded this nation. Somewhere along your family line there is an immigrant, like many others, came to this country to seek a better life. The only non-immigrants are the Native Americans. I do agree that immigrants who seek sanctuary, and are social delinquents should be removed from our society. But there are those that desire to live amongst us and become law-abiding citizens. The fact is that it is not so much the immigrants that are at fault, they are only doing what any human being would do; provide food and shelter for their families. It is the companies, farms, and other employers that offer jobs to illegal immigrants, pay them minimum wage, and increase their own profit. The opportunities for employment are there by in-humane companies and are hiring illegal immigrants. These employers are fully aware of their citizenship status, and the employer pays no taxes for hiring the employee. If you are not aware, an employer must pay employment taxes to the state and to the federal. EMPLOYERS ARE NOT PAYING TAXES, they are cutting cost, and increasing profit. They are creating the opportunity and a reason for humans to come to this country and find employment. In addition, the largest group consuming Social Well-Fare are anglo-saxon, followed by African Americans. Don't take my word for it, research this information for yourself. The illegal immigrant aspect is just a political stunt and misconception. They will never expose their fat cat, political "soft-money" contributing friends. THEY are the root to the problem. They exploit cheap labor and get richer, and the politicians divert the problem by creating off the wall scenarios. Immigrants pay taxes with fake Soc Sec numbers, but do not claim their tax refund in April, therefore leaving all of their tax refunds with the government.

Randall Parker said at August 26, 2004 5:39 PM:

Not all immigrants are equal in ability, in willingness to obey the law, in responsibility, or in motivatoin. Some are criminals. Some are lazy. Some have illegitimate kids. Hispanics have illegitimate kids at about twice the rate of whites and get locked up in jail at 3.7 times the rate of whites.

Whether anyone is an immigrant is a matter of time scale. Everyone has ancestors who came from somewhere else if you only go back far enough.

Illegals get more in benefits than they pay in taxes.

I agree with Mr. Randy Young, I am a third generation Mexican American. I belive that identity theft is on the rise due to illegal imigrants comming to the U.S. and claiming seven to ten dependants at a time. They may not understand it but by them using the idettification that they use to get work. They are destroying what most people work so hard to keep for example good Credit, Social Secuity, and other benifits that come along with being an American Citizen or a legal resident.Along with that part of it is also to blame the employer who lets them work knowing they are illegal.
Just the same Gang Violence is rising in most "Barrios" and most of the members are illegal imagrants just here to make trouble. If you or someone you know have been a victom of gang violence of any kind then you know what I mean. Once these people are caught or suspect that they are gong to be caught they either get deported or go back themselves just to come back and do the same thing over again. Those are the people that just need to go back to ware they came from and stay their!

Imigration is a good thing. But, Illigal immigration is criminal. Seems some of you get the wrong idea. We are talking about terriost and drug trafficers etc not farm workers who can immigrate legally and it is not about race as someone always throws that card, all races are welcome and legal. Bruce

I agree with marisa: my Family came here several Generations from Portugal, and we migrated legally and have worked hard to earn what our names and identities recorded, and the idea that someone can steal and destroy that without impunity and little consequence is enough to make me see rd, but the fact that these criminals are looked at as descent people is an insult to All Latins & Others who worked hard to earn their citizenship.

I work with many illegal immigrants from brazil. they all speak portuguese and think i don't understand them but my grandmother who came from portugal taught me portuguese. i know every little detail about how they get here and why. they talk about buying fake social security cards in boston and getting drivers liscenses in florida. they talk about how they love to take money from us worthless americans and that when our country falls they are gonna sit in brazil and laugh at us while they enjoy our money. they hurt our economy a lot because they send all of the money that they make back to they're country instead of spending it here. they say that they do in fact claim a lot of dependents so that they don't have to pay a lot of taxes and they never get in trouble for it. there are over 150,000 brazilians in this country and every one of them had to sneak over the border of mexico to get here. they say they come here to take our money for their country. i just don't understand how they all get away with it. i know that they pay someone in mexico $10,000 and then they can be in usa in one to two weeks. some of them have been here for 8 years, they just continue to move around so they never get caught. they also talk about having babies here so that their children will be legal citizens of america but will live brazil that way if they ever need money they can simply send there kids here for a year and then have them send all the money back to them. all they want to do is make enough money for the rest of there life so they don't have to work in brazil when they go back. the things that they say make me sick. %50 of americans are lazy , don't work and find ways to be on welfare and that's something that we just have to deal with, but the rest of us work hard for what we want and pay our taxes, and sometimes it's very difficult to get by with all the budget cuts and people getting layed off all the time, now we have people from other countries coming here and making it more difficult. i'm not at all racisist, i have a foriegn background but i have a different opinion on people who are here only for money. they complain about why should they have to pay any taxes at all if this is not even their country, but i say why should we give them work and money if this is not their country.

I believe that the diversity we enjoy in our country is what makes us a the great nation that we are. My parents immigrated from the Netherlands after the 2nd world war looking for a better life and I believe that everyone should be allowed that same privelige. As for the generalizing of lazy, parasitical Mexicans....I have observed (In Mexico) that 99.9% of Mexicans have a better work ethic and a higher moral conscience than the average American. With that said I don't think that aliens working illegally should be made legal neither. Finally I take offense to the name calling and singling out of any one ethic group. We have only ourselves to blame for the gangs and other garbage in California.

i think it amazing that people can have such a violently one sided opinion on the matter. all must agree that there are many problems and many benefits of illegal immigration. illegals do suck the system without giving much back monitarily, as well they provide the country with a labor force not found among citizens. they are mistreated in most cases, but it is their decision to come. cant think of anyone who wouldnt rather suffer the discusting biggotry here and have enough to eat than suffer under a tyranical government and a long since failed economy that they would have in their homeland. all have reasons to have a strong opinion in both directions, and for that, an intelligent person would see how ignorant it would be to only see the supporting views on one side. this forum is full of strong arguments for and against this; the problem is that they are all true. read it, weve got a lot of retards in here that dont know a thing about the subject, but for the most part, they have supported opinions. because of this, i dont understand how one could be so strongly one sided.

There is a difference between ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and those that have immigrated here legally. The masses that came through Ellis Island did it legally and those that came here now do it illegally. 2.-Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers

3.-Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact

Illegal immigrants should be deported!!

Leighton L Smith said at October 31, 2008 7:29 PM:

We are allowing the government to frame the immigration problem for us. We must consider that in some cases, such as here, the government is not acting in our own individual best interest.

Thus, the term "illegal" associated with "alien" or "immigrant" is one of the government's invention.

What we as individuals must do is look at the problem from our own perspective. It is my understanding that this has not been done very often and has not been heralded very effectively.

The reality is that foreign nationals are in every recognized nation worldwide, creating a nearly fully integrated polyglot. To somehow require all these people to get their "papers in order" with respect to the local laws of each country is crazy.

There has to be a better, more accommodating, and global solution. Like a national identity card that is accepted worldwide. This different than a passport and should be a smart card with various data on it relevant to the bearer and the country he or she hails from.

Take a look at the end-to-end treatment of the immigration problem that has been prepared by Trigon-International, Inc. This is actionable, affordable, and feasible and more aptly it addresses the problem in situ meaning that the fix goes in without having to reset the pieces on the game board.
