Increasing Number Of European Pakistani Women Forced Into Marriages

A rise in fundamentalist Islam among Pakistanis living in Europe is leading to an increasing number of young ethnically Pakistani women being tricked into returning to Pakistan to enter into forced marriages.

Aziz's story is only the most recent example of hundreds of young girls who become victims of their families' desire to preserve an age-old tradition. According to human rights activists, 250 girls like Aziz - daughters of British citizens from Pakistan - were forced into marriages with relatives in 2002 alone.

Once in Pakistan the women rarely have any recourse. Human rights activist Attiya Dawood in Pakistan is quoted in the article as saying: "Here girls are treated as animals. They are bought, sold and even bartered to settle the tribal feuds".

The "comments" link in Common Sense doesn't seem to be working

so I am commenting on the article titled "Saudi Religious Police Launch Website." Until such time that the arab countries of the middle east start running their
countries with professional politicians instead of religious clerics they will remain
will remain second-rate and under-developed.
A personel opinion: These cleric have the dirtiest minds in the world. For instance, women are expected to be completly covered from head to toe. The clerics are afraid the very sight of a bare wrist might cause
a man to have an erection! Really??? - Get real.
Now, I have to admit that my great-grandmother had to wear a bathing suit that looked more like a jump suit but my God, that was over 100 years ago! They have a long way to go.
I have no use for Saddam & Sons, but at least they put a lid on the Islamic fanatics. These other countries like Saudi Arabia or Iran really have to get their acts togeather.

Maybe they should discard their religious beliefs and culture, because of your say so.

M. Robinson,

So then if someone's culture says that women should be totally subordinate and lacking rights then you are okay with that?
